EXPLORE ECOLOGY & DESIGN WITH NATURE ON OUR NEW 65 ACRES IN PRESCOTT’S UNIQUE GRANITE DELLS
A generous and supportive donation of $4 million allowed Ecosa Institute to purchase 65 acres in Prescott’s iconic Granite Dells to preserve for nature by way of a conservation easment. The donation also provides seed money for the design of a state-of-the-art living building campus that reflects the ecological mission of Ecosa.
“This gift expresses enthusiasm for Ecosa Institute’s programming and supports the focus on how to integrate natural environments with human habitats,” said Antony Brown, Ecosa Institute Founder and Program Director. “The campus, for students of the EDCP as well as the public, truly provides an opportunity to design with nature.”
With a rich ecology, varied terrain and abundant wildlife, the site provides invaluable opportunities for the experiential learning Ecosa represents. The conservation easment provides the protection required to preserve the insights that nature inspires. This conservation easment creates opportunities for other organizations and the general public to realize the value of open space. The public, as well as students in our Ecological Design Certificate Program (EDCP) will have use of this land for interaction, observation, surveys, portfolio collection, sketching and in the future, new hands-on projects. Here you will learn the importance and purpose of designing with nature for best use, protection and preservation of this distinctive piece of planet Earth.
BUILD AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM WITH “DUAL SURVIVOR” STAR CODY LUNDIN!
Cody Lundin is a long-time supporter of and participant at Ecosa Institute. His three-day survival skills trip kicks off the Ecosa Institute semester and gives students an experience they will remember for a lifetime. During this experience he will mentor students in how to build using only materials onsite. At the Dells site students will design/build an outdoor classroom, instilling a deep respect for the surroundings and encouraging a no-impact approach to this project.
GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE ECOLOGY OF THE DELLS
In this very special and very alive ecological environment you can:
- Observe and chart the impact of the rocks, land, weather, animals and water
- Discover and track a number of bird, animal, reptile and insect species and their habitats
- Listen to the sounds of nature and develop a sense of place
- Sketch your ideas and designs and let the land inspire you
LEARN HOW NATURE CAN INFLUENCE AND GUIDE DESIGN
- Learn to make a site map of natural features that affect building and landscape design
- Develop new understandings of the five elements and see their effect on design
- Experience natural habitats as a factor of design
- Experiment, discuss and formulate new design approaches based on nature’s systems
BUILD YOUR DESIGN ECOLOGY KNOWLEDGE BY CONTRIBUTING TO A REAL-WORLD PROJECT
As a nationally recognized leader in ecological design education, Ecosa Institute now has the opportunity to design and build a building directly attuned to the needs and ways of nature. This involves the exploration of alternative systems, habitat creation and implementing best practices in ecologically sensitive planning, design and construction.
